Plate IX · selected florilegium, 2025
Original work → Maria Sibylla Merian, 1705 (Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium)
From Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (1705), Maria Sibylla Merian’s landmark study of Surinamese flora and fauna, this plate depicts a pineapple accompanied by insects, including the cockroach. Unlike the idealized florilegia of her contemporaries, Merian’s work placed plants within their lived ecologies, showing pollinators and pests alike.
