Rose, Forget-Me-Not & Hearts Ease – Sarah Mapps Douglass, 1833 | Botanical Print

Plate No. VII · aselected florilegium,  2025

Original work → Sarah Mapps Douglass, c.1830s

Sarah Mapps Douglass (1806–1882) was an educator, abolitionist, and early feminist whose botanical studies often carried inscriptions addressed to her contemporaries. In this watercolor, she combines rose, forget-me-not, and heart’s ease with a written appeal:

“Lady, while you are young and beautiful / Forget not the slave, so shall ‘Hearts Ease’ ever attend you.”

Restored for clarity while preserving her words, this plate stands as both floral study and abolitionist call, uniting beauty with responsibility on the same page.
