Plate X · selected florilegium, 2025

Original work → Gérard van Spaendonck, late 18th century

Gérard van Spaendonck (1746–1822), painter to the French court and mentor to Pierre-Joseph Redouté, was known for his opulent still life on stone paintings. This arrangement layers roses , tulips, peonies , ranunculus, morning glory, and carnations across a dark ground.

The composition dramatizes fragility and excess, where petals spill forward against the cool permanence of stone.

This print has been carefully restored to remove the yellowing of time, revealing colors closer to how the artist first painted them.
