Original work → Dirck De Bray, 1674
This restoration presents a luminous still life by Dutch Golden Age painter Dirck de Bray, who was celebrated for his delicate floral compositions and quiet devotional works. Unlike the densely packed bouquets typical of his contemporaries, de Bray’s arrangements often leave space for air and shadow, emphasizing the individuality of each bloom.
Here, a peony, iris, aquilegia, and morning glory rise from a small earthen vessel, their colors balanced between soft pastels and vivid jewel tones. Every petal and stem is rendered with devotional care, a meditation on impermanence as much as beauty. The blooms—cut, yet animated—suggest both transience and vitality, echoing the Dutch still life tradition’s fascination with cycles of life, death, and renewal.
This restored edition rebalances the aged tones of the original, drawing forward the vibrancy of the pigments while preserving the depth of its 17th-century texture. It is at once an archival record and a contemporary reawakening—an image designed for both contemplation and display.
Printed in a limited edition on archival matte paper for lasting preservation.
