African Daisy (Arctotis acaulis)
Plate VIII · selected florilegium, 2025
Original work → Georg Dionysius Ehret, mid-18th century
This plate of the African Daisy (Arctotis acaulis) was drawn by Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708–1770), one of the most influential botanical artists of the 18th century, and published by William Townsend Aiton on March 1, 1808.
Ehret’s rendering highlights the plant’s radiant orange petals and sharply lobed leaves, balancing scientific clarity with dramatic presence. Issued during a period of active introduction of African species into European gardens, the plate documents both horticultural expansion and artistic mastery.
Restored for tonal fidelity and prepared for archival display on museum-grade paper.
