This hand-restored broadside advertisement preserves one of the most enduring curios of African American conjure culture: Van Van oil. Long sold in novelty catalogues and corner shops, Van Van blends lemongrass and other botanicals into a formula used for cleansing, drawing luck, and clearing obstacles.
Presented here as part of Diasporic Arcana, the image is not merely commercial ephemera but a fragment of spiritual material history—where everyday magic crossed into everyday life.
Each print is produced on archival paper, numbered as part of the series, and intended as both study and keepsake.
